Happy Independence Day

Today we celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring Independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. But what exactly is "independence" and what does that mean to you as a Christian?

So often we desire to map our own way, and garner "control" over our lives. Sometimes doing so leads us down a path that we never intended to take, and sometimes that path can lead us to following our own desires and disobeying God. In the book of Judges chapter 17, Micah and his mother end up doing just that!

Although the two were "good" and "moral", they followed their own desires instead of what God wanted. How often do we commence in doing things that we desire without consulting God first? Sometimes even going as far as convincing ourselves and others that it must be the will of God because we desire it so much, but deep down knowing that God has not told us this is so?

Quite similar to the way many believe today, is the thinking of the people in Micah's day. During his time, "Every man did that which was right in his own eyes" Judges 17:6 (KJV). Does this sound familiar? Today many of us chose to do what we "feel" or "think" is right without consulting God first, but how do you consult with him, when he hasn't answered? It's in the word!

All the questions we have in life are answered in the word of God, the bible. If we take his word and commandments seriously and apply them to our lives daily, we will find ourselves walking more and more within the will of God. Remember it's ok to be independent, but only within the standards that God has set before us!

Stay Blessed!
